What’s the deal with shelter for musicians?

Posted on 7/3/2010 at 11:11:45 PM

Maybe you’ve seen our contract, maybe you haven’t - either way, I want to explain what our deal is with “adequate shelter” and why it’s so incredibly important to us.
First, understand that most of us (the musicians of Collage) are from Oregon!  We are happy to get wet, get dirty, muck around in the mud, [...]

Wedding Music Glossary

Posted on 7/1/2010 at 8:08:56 PM

I will be adding to this periodically; thought I’d start somewhere.  I might put it in alphabetical order eventually…
Ensemble - a group of musicians
Processional - the entrance of family/honored guests and the bridal party at the beginning of the wedding ceremony, accompanied by music. The processional may be one piece of music for everyone [...]

Processional Ideas, part 3

Posted on 7/11/2008 at 8:11:11 PM

At least I think it’s part 3. This is about the logistics of processionals. From our perspective, anyway.
If you haven’t read “Processional Ideas” parts 1, 2A, and 2B, do that.
Ok, on to logistics. In earlier editions of “Processional Ideas” I talked about music for processionals, as well as the necessity of considering [...]

“But what if it’s NOT the Vivaldi?” - alternative recessionals

Posted on 6/17/2008 at 4:04:33 PM

Last week I posted a “top ten” list of classical recessionals; now it’s time for an overdue discussion of non-classical/other/alternative recessionals.
I’ve been thinking about this for a long while. Years, actually. While Vivaldi’s Spring is a tried-and-true, can’t-go-wrong sort of piece for the recessional (and everyone loves it), and of course there are [...]

Processional ideas, Part 2B

Posted on 6/14/2008 at 9:04:15 PM

A few words about processionals for parents/grandparents and attendants.
One very important thing to consider is that it’s a good idea to delineate the processionals from the prelude music. Prelude music is usually light classical or other more or less easy-listening music; background music. The first processional piece signals the beginning of the ceremony,

Processional ideas, Part 2A

Posted on 6/14/2008 at 8:03:47 PM

“I have no idea!” you say.
Hmm… common problem. You are not alone in this. I try to put myself in your shoes. If I was getting married, what would I walk to?
I have no idea.
We’re not getting anywhere. Perhaps it’s time for a lousy Haiku:

you are getting hitched
i’ll play music for [...]

Processional ideas, part One

Posted on 6/13/2008 at 8:05:49 PM

I got all interested in the origins of wedding ceremony traditions recently, because of the particularly charming ceremony of Justin and Heather. Honestly, I had not given a moment’s thought to why we always have this crowd of well-dressed people standing around the bride and groom. And separated by gender, no less! [...]

Processional ideas - introduction

Posted on 6/13/2008 at 6:25:38 PM

This is gonna be a whole series of posts about ceremony music, so get ready…
In this series we’ll have a number of topics.

Traditions for the ceremony. It’s good to know them whether you adhere to them or not, then you can follow them or invent your own.
“I have no idea!” - our thoughts [...]

And the winner is…..

Posted on 6/13/2008 at 6:01:31 PM

The number one favorite recessional piece for 2008, so far (drum roll, please)…
Spring! from the Four Seasons, by good ol’ Vivaldi.
Vivaldi rocks. Spring is, admittedly, my personal favorite of classical recessionals. Does this have something to do with its popularity among my brides? Ok dumb question. Of course it does.
That [...]
