Coming up this weekend

I was going to make this part of the last post but then decided that it should be its own!
So here’s a weekend in the life of Collage Music:
I have to admit I’m excited… at Carrie and George’s wedding, I’m hoping to debut my arrangement of “God Only Knows,” but either way I also get to sing “I Will” for the ceremony (my own version, which is formally the same as Alison Krauss’ but in a different key and of course no banjo).
But that’s not all! We’re also playing “All You Need Is Love” for the recessional - fun! Then it’s vintage swing and bossa nova for the cocktail hour. My favorite! And the whole thing is at the same place my own brother got hitched several years ago - I was a bridesmaid, so only played one piece on flute during the ceremony rather than the whole thing. Skip was there on cello, too, so it’ll be sweet and nostalgic for us. Though I guess everything’s kinda sweet and nostalgic when you’ve been best friends and colleagues for 10 years…
After Carrie and George’s wedding, Skip and I will head downtown to the Portland Art Museum as members of the Ariel Consort, another wedding group that I sometimes play for. Usually I’m too busy doing my own weddings but on this particular day it worked out nicely, schedule-wise.
Meanwhile, the rest of Team String (Liz, Tiffany, and Justin K) will be at Redhawk Winery for Jessica’s wedding. And I’m so loving this: their recessional is none other than GNR’s “Sweet Child Of Mine.” David and I made the string trio arrangement together… well, okay, he did it. He knows that stuff note for note, and basically just wrote it down out of his head. He’s amazing like that. I also wrote out an arrangement of “That’s All” - a very sweet jazz standard that will go during the ceremony. Listen to Ricky Nelson sing it on youtube!
Then Sunday, we’re back on the east side. David will be back from his tour and he and Doug go to Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden for some cello and guitar action. That’ll be fun for Doug because usually he’s holding down the bottom end musically; with David he gets to play all the melodies!
A little later on, Liz, Skip, and I go to Jess and Daudi’s wedding at Jess’ house as a flute/violin/cello trio. I’m smiling as I write this because they decided to carve their initials into a tree in Jess’ backyard during the ceremony, as an alternative to lighting candles or pouring sand (while we play none other than Schubert’s Ave Maria). NO ONE does that! I love it!
I’ll let you know how it all goes… wish us luck ![]()
